Motorbikes

I have loved motorbikes since I was 16 years old. My dream bike was a baby blue Gen 1 BMW S1000RR. I love modifying and working on my own bikes (legally, of course!). One day, I hope to take them to the track.

Computer Technology

As a software engineer, technology is a huge part of my life.

  • OS: Fedora 44 Linux (Daily Driver).
  • Gaming: Dual-boot with Windows 11 for anti-cheat games.

The estate

Origin Live

Workstation · Fedora 44 KDE

  • Ryzen 9 7950X3D (16C/32T)
  • 64 GB DDR5
  • RX 7900 XTX
  • 5× SSD, no spinning disks
  • 5 GbE

Main dev PC and control station; every other machine is driven from here. Sleeps, hosts nothing.

Oracle Live

Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro · Omarchy (Arch / Hyprland)

  • Core i5-1240P (12C/16T)
  • 8 GB
  • Iris Xe
  • 256 GB NVMe

Lightweight daily driver and SSH client into Origin and Vortex; also lends Origin its camera and speakers.

Vortex Live

The always-on server · Fedora + rootless Podman

  • 2× Xeon E5-2670 v2 (20C/40T)
  • 128 GB DDR3 ECC
  • Radeon Vega 56
  • Mixed btrfs drives
  • 1200 W

Media, photos, music, files, local LLMs, monitoring and a private git forge. The production box.

ProDure Staged

Dell PowerEdge R620 · "professional endurance"

  • 2× Xeon E5-2620 (12C/24T)
  • 192 GB DDR3 ECC
  • PERC H710, 4× 2.5" bays
  • iDRAC

Isolated business box, one VM per project under Proxmox. Sourced; deploys after the network rebuild.

Inspiron Live

Dell Inspiron 3505 · Proxmox VE

  • Ryzen 5 3500U (4C/8T)
  • 16 GB
  • 256 GB NVMe

Proxmox rehearsal box and an independent monitoring node, so alerting survives a Vortex outage.

Titan Planned

Planned · big-model CPU inference

  • 256 GB DDR3 ECC in hand (8× 32 GB)
  • Board, CPUs, PSU and GPU not yet chosen
  • Target: a 24 GB-class GPU for the hot tensors

A box for models too big for any GPU: experts in RAM, attention on the card. Platform still open.

GPU History

I'm a big fan of AMD GPUs - they offer the best bang for the buck on the used market!

  1. 7770

    Radeon HD 7770

    My first cards (1GB & 2GB).

  2. 7950

    MSI Frozr 7950

    The 'coolest' card I had.

  3. 7970

    Radeon HD 7970

  4. 7990

    Radeon HD 7990

  5. 290x Lightning

    MSI 290x Lightning Edition

  6. 290x Vapor

    MSI 290x Vapor

  7. Fury X

Homelab

I run one always-on server and a handful of machines around it, and it has taught me more than any course. Everything on it is self-hosted, reached only over a private mesh network, and written down as decision records so I can't quietly re-learn the same lesson twice.

What it taught me

  • Mesh networking: Tailscale across every device, HTTPS front doors served over the mesh, nothing exposed to the public internet.
  • Selective VPN egress: Proton VPN for exactly the containers that need it, by sharing a network namespace, not by routing the whole box.
  • Containers without Kubernetes: rootless Podman under systemd, two users sharing one port space, and what breaks when they collide.
  • Storage that matches the workload: per-drive btrfs tiers, and why a database on a consumer SSD stalls — power-loss-protected drives fixed a p99 fsync of 25 ms down to 3 ms.
  • Backups are the real risk: designing a 3-2-1 plan when the filesystem has no cross-drive parity.
  • One GPU, many consumers: keeping a single model resident on an 8 GB card and making every service consume it through one alias.
  • Observability: Prometheus and Grafana, exporters per user, and a monitor that speaks even when everything is fine — because one that only speaks on failure is indistinguishable from a dead one.
  • Decision records: forty-two of them. The habit outlasts the hardware.
